Ear Infection in Children: When to Manage at Home and When a Pediatrician in Rome Is Needed

Author: Dr. Chiara Cozzolino – Pediatrician and Neonatologist (Registered with the Order of Physicians no. 64588)

Reading time: 5 minutes The child suddenly wakes up at night crying, touches their ear, is irritable and perhaps also has a fever. Otitis media (ear infection) is one of the most common infections in children, especially in colder months and after colds or flu.

In most cases, it is not a serious emergency, but the pain can be very intense and frighten parents. Knowing what to do in the first few hours can help manage the situation more calmly and understand when an urgent check-up is truly necessary.

The 3 Most Common Mistakes to Avoid

1. Administering antibiotics without medical indication Not all ear infections require antibiotics. Many forms, especially viral ones, improve spontaneously. Improper use of antibiotics promotes bacterial resistance and can cause unnecessary side effects. 2. Putting drops in the ear without knowing if the eardrum is intact Some ear medications may be contraindicated if the eardrum is perforated or if fluid is draining from the ear. Before using ear drops, it is always best to consult a pediatrician. 3. Underestimating the pain Even if an ear infection is often not dangerous, the pain should be treated. Paracetamol (acetaminophen) or ibuprofen, following the correct dosages based on the child's weight, help control pain and improve overall well-being.

When a medical visit is urgent:

Contact MediClick.co Rome's 24-hour pediatric service immediately if the child:

Is less than 6 months old and has a fever or suspected ear infection. Has severe pain that does not improve with antipyretics or painkillers. Has pus or fluid draining from the ear. Has a persistent high fever for more than 48 hours. Has swelling behind the ear or the ear appears “pushed” forward. Refuses to drink or eat.

If the child continues to cry, cannot sleep due to pain, or if you have doubts about the most appropriate therapy, do not wait alone until dawn. **MediClick.co Rome's pediatricians are available for home visits or video consultations to assess the child's symptoms, guide you in home management, and determine if an emergency room visit is necessary.
