Sore throat: when it's just an annoyance and when a doctor is needed

Not all sore throats are the same. Here's how to distinguish a fleeting ailment from an infection that requires a timely medical visit.

Sore throat is one of the most common symptoms, especially during colder months. It often resolves on its own in a few days, but in some cases, it can be a sign of a bacterial infection that requires specific treatment.

Signs not to ignore

  • Fever above 38°C lasting more than 48 hours
  • Difficulty swallowing even liquids
  • Obvious white patches on the tonsils
  • Swollen and painful lymph nodes in the neck
  • Persistent hoarseness for more than a week

What you can do at home

Gargling with warm salt water, honey in hot drinks, vocal rest, and abundant hydration are the most effective remedies for mild cases. Avoid smoking and very dry environments.

When to call a doctor

If symptoms do not improve in 3-4 days or if the signs listed above are present, professional evaluation is important. A visit can quickly clarify whether it is a viral, bacterial, or another type of infection, avoiding unnecessary treatments.

A quick visit without having to travel

In cases of severe sore throat, especially if accompanied by fever, avoiding travel is a sensible choice. A home doctor can visit you within a few hours and immediately prescribe the most appropriate treatment.
